Henry Morgan

Captain Henry Morgan and his cheerful pirate group last night succeeded again to seduce numerous foreign and local audience, mostly families with children, who had a chance to enjoy an interactive play “Morgan’s treasure“ which was directed by Petra B. Blašković. The audience was led by canon of Dvigrad, Denis Brižić, who is champion of the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka, and had the opportunity to see the ruins of the town Dvigrad climbing up to the basilica, where the show was held. The inspiration for the event is a legend which says that it was precisely in the medieval Dvigrad where captain Henry Morgan, a treacherous pirate hid his treasure. To the cheerful pirate party full of music, dance and pirate melodies could be joined by guests themselves, and it is the interaction with the audience what makes the perfomances of Istra Inspirit specific. In the treasure hunt participated all visitors, but the treasure was gained by only one visitor with the correct map which led to the treasure, precisely the truffle products of the producer named Zigante. However, the show tells that the real treasure lies in ourselves and has a bigger value than the material (treasure).

Henry Morgan was embodied by Antonio Jakupčević, academic actor from Osijek, while his pirates successfully revived Dominik Karakašić,  Šandor Slacki, Frano Novljan, Elena Orlić, Petra B. Blašković, Dean Gotal and Samuel Augustiny. On the sound of the pirate song reminded us ‘pirates – musicians': Andrej Pezić, Samanta Stell, Anka Kovač Augustiny, Nataša Dragun and versatile Miroslav Cerovac, Sedina Cerovac and Kristijan Dellabernardina. Other roes that illustrate medieval atmosphere of the Dvigrad belong to Zoja Poropat, Jasna Petković and Denis Brižić who was using native chakavian dialect and managed to evoke the Middle Ages of Istria. For mask and makeup is credited Ivna Škoro, and for the authentic pirate costumes Kristina Nefat and Marina Štemberg.

Istra Inspirit musical managed again to revive the medieval Dvigrad and has demonstrated the quality of their performance. _DSC0732 _DSC0719 _DSC0711 _DSC0694 _DSC0671 _DSC0669 _DSC0667 _DSC0646 _DSC0643 _DSC0642 _DSC0611 _DSC0577

As summer approaches, Istra Inspirit kick-started the new season with our show Morgan’s Treasure in Dvigrad. Morgan’s Treasure has always been an all-time-favorite to the tourists around the world for it’s international reputation that has been attracting audiences at all ages.

The main character, our Captain Henry Morgan, was acted by a young actor from Osijek Antonio Jakupčević. Throughout the whole show, he did an execellent job on playing the role of the fierce captain of the pirates. For one magical evening, life has been brought back to the abandoned, middle-age town of Dvigrad. With the actors, musicians, acrobats and even the fire-breathers, a joyful and lively atmosphere with music and dances was created within the walls of the castle. It’s really hard to express how wonderful the vibe was if you haven’t seen it yourself!

‘Aye Aye, father.

What? Who is there?

My name is Harri Morgan. Father, I seek a safe place for myself to hide.

Why do you need to hide?

I’m not sure that you, as man of faith would like to hear about the things that i’ve done.

Please, tell it to me, my child. The God is forgiving.

Yes, father, I’m sure, but already made reservations in Hell, along with the people that are searching for me.

Oh yes, I’m not alone here. I’m being followed.’

At the very beginning of the show, as we slowly walked down the rocky path to the castle,we were welcomed by two women infected with illness. They protraited the atmosphere of the town destroyed by the plague in the past perfectly. For the excellent make up, the credit goes our make-up artist Ivna Škoro. Then the storyline was surrounded by the dialogue between a friar, who is the  academic actor Denis Brižić and Captain Henry Morgan. With a melancholic tone, Captain morgan gave confession to the friar on his days with his pirates crew on finding the ‘lost treasure’, the treasure that can be found in each of us.

The whole story about Captain Morgan and his arrival to Dvigrad, where he hide the treasure, has gone to a new dimension when the pirates crew came to the castle with the music, mimics and the gesticulations. Watching the pirates singing songs, swallowing swords and blowing fire, the audiences enjoyed an authentic feast of the pirates in the sea.  For the creation of this unique experience, we have to thank Petra B. Blašković who was also acting in the performance. Beside already mentioned actors, there are also the excellent Dominik Karakašić, Šandor Slacki and Nenad Pavlović playing the roles of the pirates, musicians Nataša Dragun, Samanta Stell, Anka Kovač Augustiny and Sebastian Stell as well as Zoja Poropat and Jasna Petković in the roles of the plague patients.

The ones who give the additional value to the whole experience are the multitalented Miroslav and Sedina Cerovac and Kristijan Dellabernardina ‘Kolumbo’ as the fire breathers. The composers of the music are Bika Blasko and Ognjen Jovanović. Other supporting actors in the performance are Elena Orlić, Damir Benčić, Nikolina Baškarad, Danijel Zmaj Novoselac and Luka Kontošić. The costumes were designed by Kristina Nefat.

Dvigrad – the small town that inspired Istra Inspirit or ‘Piretes of the Caribbean’ in Istrian way

It’s Wednesday, 25th of August 2014. After many of the rainy days we had in this weird unexpected summer season, the sunshine has finaly found its way to us.:) You just wanted to lay down and finally start a vacation! But, this strange word ‘vacation’ is something Inspirit team is not really familiar with. :) We were still working, preparing for our newest event – Morgan’s treause in Dvigrad.

Are all the costumes here? When does the makeup sart? Do we have enough oil for the torches? Is everybody here?  Where will we hide the treasure, and where the maps?

It was crazy:) Among the pile of questions slowly rising in our heads, we did not even notice that Saša’s table started to have the ”post-it-colour”. Those were the names of the guests who booked their tickets. We had to start counting, cause the places were limited. Yup, it was true, the show was sold out. Just like that! In matter of minutes, hours, just one day of not looking and you have a table full of bookings. :) Everything was clear – the pirates conquered our audience before they even started:)

And really, Morgan’s treasure turned out to be the fastest sold event of the season. Aaand – an event people still talk about months later, with the same excitement we started dancing and singing with, while letting the pirates take us away. It was awsome:) The audience clapping and singing:) It was worth doing a musical – it gets people going:) We were so proud, going in our minds through all things we’ve been through trying to put this together, fighting the rain and the logistics:) At this moment we knew we revived one more legend and presented the ruins of a beautiful medieval town in a new way:)

It was Dvigrad’s turn

It all started one rainy autumn day when Inspirt team was getting back from Zagreb, where we had a presentation. We started to talk about Dvigrad and its legends realizing this little town had so much to offer. It had to be Inspirit place:) We started researching, networking and talking to everyone who could get this story and be related to it. A big help and encouragement came to us from the Općina Kanfanar and its chief Sandro Jurman, who carried the same idea about Dvigrad as we did:) They were with us 100% , all the way. They recognized this opportunity as chance to promote their municipality and as a chance for valorization of their tangible and intangible heritage. But not just that – it was a way to get more tourists, and more people in this unknown place.

Together we got this Inspirit story up and included the little ones form Kanfanar kindergarten, letting them feel the pirate passion themselves, and also the folklore group ”Dvigrad’‘ who performed some traditional dances before the actors came to the scene. They showed us some dances which were danced before the plague ruined this town. Having our great art-director Petra Blašković again, we had no doubts this story will get big. We could finally see the final product:). Her imagination and knowledge proved once again her greatness:)

Why is Morgan special?

In the third year of our existence, we still revive the legends and stories through our Inspirit events, and for the end of the season we wanted to do a step further, something that will elevate this story on a complitely new level. Morgan’s treasure had to be that – something different. And it was – the first INSPIRIT MUSICAL  in which original music took the spotlight. We are not talking about a Brodway musical, but an Istrian themed interactive show, done in Inspirit way, that made people sing with us:)

”What will we do with the drunken sailor? What will we do with the drunken sailor? What will we do with the drunken sailor early in the morning?”

And so this show included fire-eaters, breakdance dancers and parkour artists, and musicians! We did not let the audience be passive; our pirates turned them into their fellow crew-man and asked them to dance and sing, play games and in the end – even find the treasure by themselves! Many surprises in the show triggered different reactions; from getting empathy for the turbulent life of Henry Morgan to getting really surprised when the actors jumped over their dinner tables, playing in their – what would usualy be – ‘audience zone’. There is no audience zone and no stage in Inspirit – the whole world is a stage:) Of course, we cannot forget the one true pirate dinner – a menu created for this purpose, which fitted perfectly into the story.

Today, when the new season is so close, we still laugh remembering the faces of our audience, while going through beautifly reviewed events. We are satisfied! :) We revived another legend, another forgotten place got its new role. And you? Do you want to know how do the ‘‘Pirates of the Caribbean” look when done in Istrian way? See you this year on Morgan’s treasure!!!
